Juvenile dermatomyositis, or polymyositis, is a rare autoimmune disorder affecting the skin and muscles in children. The body’s immune system attacks blood vessels, causing inflammation. This leads to rashes at the joints and weakening of muscles, particularly in the neck, shoulders and hips. Symptoms can range from mild to severe.
The cause of dermatomyositis is not known, although there are some genetic factors that can contribute to it. In some cases, respiratory or gastrointestinal infections may also trigger its onset. Rash-like symptoms and the progressive weakening of muscles can be difficult to spot as they may occur gradually in children.
