Nonstress Tests in Pregnancy

You may need a nonstress test (NST) in pregnancy, a noninvasive testing method that measures baby’s heart rate in response to movement or contractions, if you meet certain criteria. The cadence of testing will be dependent on the reason for your NST. “Higher-risk pregnancies require more frequent monitoring compared to lower-risk pregnancies,” said Jamy Bulgarelli, D.O., OBGYN at Obstetrics and Gynecology of Grand Prairie, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. If you fail the NST, it’s important to know it doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong.  “Babies take naps throughout pregnancy, and their heart rates become less reactive while asleep,” said Dr. Bulgarelli. Your provider will likely try repeating the NST after attempting to stimulate baby.
