The tiniest, most fragile babies benefit from being read to, which is why the Joe DiMaggio NICU at Memorial Hospital Miramar in South Florida participates in the annual Babies With Books read-a-thon. The teen-led literacy organization began the read-a-thon a few years ago and has gained exceptional nationwide participation. “We all know that reading early to your baby helps in the parent-child bonding relationship, it helps with speech development later on and neurodevelopment as well,” said Elaine Green, neonatal nurse practitioner at Pediatrix® Neonatology of Florida.
