How to Treat RSV

RSV, or respiratory syncytial virus, is common respiratory illness that causes fever and mild cold-like symptoms. Since it’s not treatable with antibiotics, it’s helpful for parents to know how to keep their child comfortable as it runs its course. “Any mucus in the nose of a baby should be managed with saline drops (sold over the counter) and a suction bulb,” said Kristina Deeter, M.D., specialty medical officer for pediatric critical care at Pediatrix® Medical Group. “This is the most common and effective treatment to keep your baby breathing well.” Keeping young children hydrated is also important. “Continue to offer breast milk, formula, and/or Pedialyte regularly to keep your baby hydrated and having regular wet diapers,” emphasized Dr. Deeter.
