Boy Has Hemispherotomy After Suffering a Stroke as a Baby

After having a stroke as an infant, four-year-old Jack had brain surgery (a hemispherotomy) to disconnect the healthy side of his brain from the side that continues to have seizures. The procedure prevents the seizures from affecting the healthy half of his brain. Jack’s stroke was “very surprising and unexplained,” said Karen Keough, M.D., a pediatric neurologist with Pediatrix® Specialty Care of Austin. “There's no reason to have had that. It’s rare and usually happens because of a clot or bleeding in the brain. Sometimes it happens in children with congenital heart disease. Sometimes it happens in healthy kids, like Jack.”
