Raymond M. Stefko, M.D., is a board-certified Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon. He joined Pediatric Orthopedic Associates of San Antonio in 2007 after completing a distinguished career in the United States Air Force Medical Service.

Dr. Stefko attended medical school at the Paul Dishner College of Medicine in Johnson City, Tenn. He then completed a General Surgery Internship and Orthopedic Residency Training at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, followed by a Pediatric Orthopedic Fellowship at Children’s Hospital and Health Center in San Diego, California.

After completing his fellowship training, Dr. Stefko returned to San Antonio and became the Chief of Pediatric Orthopedics and subsequently the Director of the Orthopedic Residency Training Program at Wilford Hall Medical Center. He has a keen interest in humanitarian missions in the developing world and has organized over a dozen pediatric orthopedic surgical missions during his active duty and civilian medical careers in Honduras, El Salvador, St. Kitts and Turkmenistan. He served as an Orthopedic Surgeon on a Mobile Field Surgical Team in support of air operations in Oman and was involved in medical support to establish Peter Ganci Air Force Base in Manas, Kyrgyzstan, during the opening months of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Dr. Stefko’s previous teaching positions include Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences, Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and Honorary Professor of Orthopedics at the Hospital Escuela, Tegucigalpa, Honduras. He is Former Chief of Professional Staff at Methodist Children’s Hospital.

He has published research in the areas of spinal fractures, cerebral palsy, gait analysis, minimally invasive spinal deformity correction, complicated ankle fractures, the effect of hyperbaric oxygen on fracture healing and lumbar spine fusion, and experimental lengthening of the lumbar spine. He has also published multiple book chapters on Pediatric Orthopedics.

Dr. Stefko is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons and holds current medical licenses in Texas, California, Montana and Tennessee. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America, Society of Military Orthopedic Surgeons, San Antonio Orthopedic Society, Bexar County Medical Society and Texas Medical Association.

Dr. Stefko is married with three children, and in his off time, enjoys hunting, shooting, snow skiing, fishing and SCUBA diving.
