Gretchen Koontz, M.D., MPH, a board-certified OBGYN and maternal-fetal medicine specialist, grew up in Oregon enjoying the outdoors. She moved to Atlanta in 1995 to attend medical school at Emory University School of Medicine. She completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Washington Hospitals in Seattle, followed by her fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at Wake Forest University in North Carolina. She also trained in London, England, studying with Prof. Kypros Nicolaides, FRCOG, and in New York, with Ronald Wapner, M.D. Dr. Koontz remained on faculty at Wake Forest University after completing her fellowship, prior to relocating to Atlanta.

Dr. Koontz has a Master of Science in Public Health Research degree. She has participated in research projects with Columbia University and the Maternal Health Division of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, while practicing in Atlanta. She has also been actively involved in the Georgia Maternal Mortality Committee and is currently the president of the Georgia OBGyn society.

Dr. Koontz has been with Maternal-Fetal Specialists for more than 15 years and is the practice medical director. She has three sons with her husband, Greg, and two energetic dogs. She enjoys traveling to the U.S. national parks with her family, running, hiking, biking, skiing and any outdoors activities.
