The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently approved updated COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna that target the Omicron variant XBB.1.5. The new vaccines come at a crucial time ahead of flu season, when multiple respiratory viruses, including coronavirus, are circulating at once. Zachary Hoy, M.D., a pediatric infectious disease specialist and medical director at Pediatrix® Nashville Pediatric Infectious Disease, suggests parents talk with their child’s pediatrician about the risks and benefits of the vaccine and their child’s risk of COVID-19. “In pediatrics, this new vaccine can be helpful for those at risk of severe disease, such as kids with compromised immune systems, including those with cancer or on chemotherapy-type medications,” said Dr. Hoy.
