Mastitis Symptoms, Causes and Treatments

Mastitis is a painful condition affecting one breast, characterized by inflammation in the ducts, alveoli and connective tissue, according to recent research by the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine (ABM). “Typically, the first sign of mastitis is breast pain, and the affected breast may become swollen,” said Sarah Jordan, M.D., an OBGYN at OB Hospitalists of Texas, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. “It is very important to treat mastitis. If left untreated, an abscess may form that could cause you to become very sick and require surgical treatment.”
