COVID Cases Milder in Kids


A new study found that that infants’ immune response to COVID was located primarily in their noses, rather than their blood, which may explain why children have less severe responses than adults. Most experts agree it’s not clear why certain healthy children develop severe presentations while others do not, but a severe immune response might be to blame. “Some children's immune systems activate COVID too strongly with too much and nonspecific inflammation,” said Zachary Hoy, M.D., a board-certified pediatric infectious disease specialist and medical director at Pediatrix® Nashville Pediatric Infectious Disease. “This inflammation can cause multiple organs to be involved and lead to difficulty in those organs from functioning, especially the heart.”
