Dr. Ayman Khmour attended medical school at the Jordan University of Science and Technology. After graduation, he started pediatric training in Jordan, then came to the United States in 2003, where he began his postgraduate training. Dr. Khmour completed his residency at Michigan State University Pediatric Residency Program, then joined The Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee for neonatal-perinatal medicine fellowship training. During his fellowship, Dr. Khmour focused on patients with congenital diaphragmatic hernia and their outcomes. He also obtained a certificate in bioethics.

Dr. Khmour joined Children’s Mercy Hospital (CMH) and the University of Missouri Kansas City in 2009. He practiced there for 11 years, during which time he was promoted to associate professor in pediatrics in 2017. During his tenure there, he rounded on patients in the level IV NICU, was part of the BPD-CLD team and was a member of their core ECMO team and the small baby NICU team. Dr. Khmour co-founded the neuro-NICU program and directed the neonatal/neurology follow-up clinic that focused on infants with HIE and post-ECMO and post-CDH repair babies. He also directed the combined NICU/surgery follow-up clinic. In his last year at CMH, Dr. Khmour served as the associate medical director for the NICU and participated in reviewing and developing various clinical protocols and guidelines.
