After the physical demands of childbirth, it’s normal to feel uncertain or anxious about postpartum sex. It’s best to wait until you’ve healed before resuming sex, but if you feel ready sooner, you still have options. “Oral sex is generally safe once healing has begun,” said Summer Okimoto, CNM, a certified nurse-midwife at Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists of Georgia, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. Sex may feel unfamiliar after pregnancy. “I reassure patients that it’s very common for sex to feel different at first due to healing, pelvic floor changes and hormonal shifts,” explained Okimoto. If discomfort continues over time, she recommended talking with a provider and considering pelvic floor therapy. “Pelvic floor physical therapy, when needed, can help restore comfort and function,” said Okimoto.
