The sleepy girl mocktail, which combines tart cherry juice, magnesium powder and prebiotic soda or sparkling water, is trending on social media for its claimed sleep benefits. But is it safe to drink during pregnancy? According to Tania Lopez, CNM, a certified nurse-midwife at Pediatrix® OB Hospitalists of Texas, the individual ingredients of the sleepy girl mocktail aren’t unsafe during pregnancy. When you’re shopping for ingredients, Lopez said opting for sugar-free tart cherry juice is best, especially for those with diabetes or gestational diabetes. She also suggested buying magnesium glycinate, the type of magnesium that aids sleep. “As a supplement, it can be used for different effects – like a laxative, for example – so use the one that’s indicated for helping with sleep,” explained Lopez.
