How to Manage Postpartum Hair Loss

Many changes are expected after having a baby, but postpartum hair loss can still catch new mothers off guard. While increased shedding is completely normal and temporary, it can understandably be upsetting. Postpartum hair loss usually begins about three months after delivery, and then re-growth begins to happen starting at about six months, according to Tania Lopez, CNM, a certified nurse-midwife at Pediatrix® OB Hospitalists of Texas. “Women are typically shocked at how much hair is lost after having a baby,” described Lopez. To help manage postpartum hair loss, continue to take prenatal vitamins, as they “help with any nutrients that might be missing from your diet,” said Lopez. Sticking to a balanced diet can also help. “Eat balanced foods with lots of fruits/vegetables and protein as well as healthy fats,” suggested Lopez. Doing so helps your body replenish what it needs to function normally and can contribute to healthy hair growth, she explained.
