The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently held a panel on selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, focusing mainly on their risks during pregnancy while giving little attention to potential benefits. According to Amber Samuel, M.D., a board-certified maternal-fetal medicine specialist at Obstetrix® Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists of Houston, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group, antidepressants enhance mood and daily functioning but not taking them when needed may have a significant impact. "While we always advise using any medication only when necessary and only at the lowest effective dose, patients on these medications are on them for a reason," said Dr. Samuel. "Untreated mood and other psychiatric disorders can lead to significant perinatal risks up to and including death."
