Expectant mothers might be familiar with the term "pregnancy glow," which refers to brighter, healthier-looking skin and naturally rosy cheeks during pregnancy. Pregnancy glow is definitely a real thing, said Tania Lopez, CNM, certified nurse-midwife at Pediatrix® OB Hospitalists of Texas. “The increased blood flow to the skin surface and extra production of skin hydrating oils and melanin make skin look bright with extra color in the cheeks,” explained Lopez. During pregnancy, melanin production increases, which can result in both beneficial and adverse effects. “This makes the skin look brighter,” said Lopez, but it can also lead to a condition called melasma. “The increased production of melanin can also cause the ‘mask of pregnancy’ as well as the darkening of the skin on the abdomen and even the areola of the nipples.”
