A key concern with drinking herbal tea during pregnancy is that many varieties remain largely untested, leaving experts uncertain about which are safe. Some, however, have been linked to potentially significant side effects in expectant mothers. “Because there aren’t many studies on these substances and they’re not rigorously regulated, it’s best to practice caution before diving in and drinking large amounts of [anything] that may have the potential to interfere with growing a healthy baby,” said Tania Lopez, CNM, a certified nurse-midwife at Pediatrix® OB Hospitalists of Texas. Green tea is safe in small amounts, but Lopez noted that it contains a compound that may interfere with folic acid absorption, which is essential for neural tube development during the first trimester.
