You might be surprised to know the many health benefits of having sex. “Sex can be good for your health for many reasons,” said Amy Wetter, M.D., a board-certified OBGYN at Northside Women’s Specialists, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. “Some of these include better sleep, lower stress, improved self-esteem, lower blood pressure and pain relief.” Improved sleep is a notable advantage. “Sex can improve sleep by the release of hormones called oxytocin, prolactin and endorphins,” said Dr. Wetter. “This combination of hormones can produce a sedative effect.” You’ll also enjoy glowing skin as an elevated heart rate increases blood flow to your face. “This causes your blood vessels to dilate and that gives you the rosy look,” explained Dr. Wetter. “While this is a temporary result, the other benefits of sex such as better sleep and reduced stress is also good for your skin in the long run.”
