GLP-1 Use in Pregnancy

GLP-1 medications such as Ozempic, Mounjaro, Zepbound and Wegovy have become much more common recently. If you are pregnant or planning to be, you may wonder whether these medications are safe during pregnancy. If you took a GLP-1 medication during early pregnancy, you may need to be more closely monitored during your pregnancy, explained Anushka Chelliah, M.D., a board-certified maternal-fetal medicine specialist at Obstetrix® Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists of Houston, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. “If you had exposure to these medications early in pregnancy, you should notify your obstetrics provider, and surveillance with a maternal-fetal medicine physician may be indicated as well for a detailed anatomy ultrasound of the fetus and serial growth assessments,” said Dr. Chelliah.
