Model Elsie Hewitt, girlfriend of comedian and actor Pete Davidson, recently shared that she has experienced chronic pain during her pregnancy due to Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), a set of disorders that weaken the body's collagen. Hewitt also suffers from endometriosis. According to Anushka Chelliah, M.D., a board-certified maternal-fetal medicine specialist at Obstetrix® Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists of Houston, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group, endometriosis is a condition where “tissue typically found inside the endometrium within the uterus grows beyond the uterus in and near other organ systems.” This can be associated with pain, inflammation and scar tissue in and around the pelvic organs and can be associated with infertility, difficulty conceiving and reduced egg quality, she said. For those who are pregnant and dealing with EDS, Dr. Chelliah recommends planning for “extra support” during pregnancy, including physical therapy and joint braces if needed. After birth, she said that “pelvic floor support is important to prevent pelvic organ prolapse.”
