Decoding Vaginal Discharge

While vaginal discharge is typically normal, the many colors and types one may experience can be difficult to decode. Green or yellow discharge is often associated with infection. “You should definitely be evaluated, especially if you are having pelvic pain, which may indicate pelvic inflammatory disease,” said Amy Wetter, M.D., a board-certified OBGYN at Northside Women’s Specialists, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. Gray discharge often indicates bacterial vaginosis and should be evaluated, especially if its accompanied by an odor or irritation. “Most of the time this will not resolve on its own,” said Dr. Wetter.
