As your due date approaches, you may wonder whether there are safe, natural ways to encourage labor. One common question is whether sex can help bring it on. Late-pregnancy sex is often promoted as an at-home way to encourage contractions, and there is some logic behind the idea. “Semen contains prostaglandins, which can contribute to cervical softening,” explained Summer Okimoto, a certified nurse-midwife at Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists of Georgia, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. Sex that leads to orgasm may also help encourage labor. “When a woman has an orgasm, the hormone oxytocin is released, and this can stimulate uterine contractions,” said Okimoto.
