On May 6, C.D. Anthony Herndon, M.D., FAAP, FACS, will discuss “Perinatal Urinary Tract Dilation: Are We Managing It Correctly?”

After this session, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the timing of appropriate follow-up for prenatal hydronephrosis.
  • Identify patients at most risk of urinary tract infection and when to start prophylactic antibiotics.
  • Evaluate which patients should undergo more involved testing postnatally.

Dr. Herndon is the J. Richard Tashjian Professor of Urology at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at Virginia Commonwealth University. He serves as the chief of pediatric urology as well as the surgeon-in-chief at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond. Dr. Herndon earned both his BS in business administration and his Doctor of Medicine from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He completed a six-year residency in urology at the University of Connecticut as well as a pediatric urology fellowship at Riley Hospital for Children. He previously served on the executive committees of the Society for Pediatric Urology and the American Academy of Pediatrics’ (AAP) Section on Urology and Society for Fetal Urology (SFU), executing the roles of secretary/treasurer and president or president-elect (AAP). In addition, Dr. Herndon is the editor-in-chief for the Journal of Pediatric Urology.

Dr. Herndon’s main research interests include longitudinal studies involving prenatal urinary tract dilation. He has co-authored several consensus statements involving this condition and serves as the principal investigator for the SFU Multi-Center Hydronephrosis Registry, which he initiated as a resident in 1998. Most recently, he co-authored the AAP Clinical Report for Perinatal Urinary Tract Dilation.
