Diaper rash is any rash that develops inside the diaper area, characterized by red, irritated skin. It is usually caused by prolonged contact with wet or soiled diapers, friction or skin sensitivity. However, introduction to new foods, allergies to diaper materials or even yeast infections can also be factors. While most cases can be treated with proper care at home, understanding the underlying cause is key. Involve your health care team when necessary. To prevent or manage diaper rash, proper cleaning with gentle materials and techniques is crucial. Consistent gentle cleaning, breathable and well-fitting diapers, frequent changes and the use of zinc oxide-based cream or petroleum jelly to protect the skin are all effective for preventing and treating diaper rashes. Most mild rashes will clear up within 3-5 days with consistent care. If the rash worsens, persists after 3-5 days or shows signs of infection (e.g., blisters, pus, red streaks or fever), visit your provider to ensure your baby receives the correct treatment and prevent complications.
