Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

Our team of board-eligible/board-certified pediatric critical care physicians have completed more than 10 years of training to provide around-the-clock care for critically ill or injured infants, children and adolescents in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at The Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children.

Children are admitted to the PICU for a variety of reasons, including trauma, cardiac defects, congenital anomalies, respiratory distress, immunological disorders, oncological emergencies, severe infections, drug overdose, dialysis therapy and recovery that can follow a comprehensive surgery.

An Experienced Team of Experts

Pediatric intensive care physicians collaborate with other health care professionals to provide care to children in the PICU, including pediatric subspecialists, critical care nurses and respiratory therapists. All team members are pediatric trained, skilled and knowledgeable. Their coordinated efforts and compassionate, family-centered approach help ensure patients receive timely and appropriate treatment, helping speed recovery, minimize pain and improve outcomes. Our patients also benefit from the most advanced technology in the PICU, which is at the forefront of pediatric critical care in the United States.

Pediatric ECMO

The PICU provides a life-saving technique, called extra corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), that mimics the function of the heart and lungs, allowing a patient to rest while natural healing of the affected organs takes place. ECMO is used for infants and children suffering from respiratory and/or cardiac failure as a result of birth defects, trauma or severe infection.

PICU Family Lounge

We understand that the hospitalization of a critically ill or injured child can be stressful for parents. While we provide care to patients, we also support their families during this trying time. We encourage parents to sleep at their child’s bedside and participate in the care of their child while in the PICU. We also offer family amenities that include refreshments, showers and laundry facilities.
