Jama Sy, M.D.

Dr. Jama S. Sy is a dual-board-certified pediatrician and pediatric intensivist with more than 20 years of experience in pediatrics, pediatric critical care medicine, clinical leadership and research. He currently serves as the pediatric intensivist and research director at HCA Florida Palms West Hospital in Loxahatchee, Florida, where he is part of a multidisciplinary team dedicated to delivering high-quality, evidence-based critical care.
Dr. Sy completed his pediatric critical care fellowship training at Texas Children’s Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine, one of the nation’s top pediatric institutions, consistently ranked among the Top 5 Children’s Hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. During his fellowship, he trained in one of the most advanced critical care environments in the country, shaping the principles and skills that continue to guide his practice today.
Originally from the Philippines, Dr. Sy was a consistent honor student throughout his education. He completed an accelerated three-year biology program at the University of Santo Tomas, designed for high-achieving students pursuing advanced medical education. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of the City of Manila on a full academic scholarship, graduating among the top of his class. He ranked 6th out of 2,253 examinees on the Philippine physician licensure exam, placing in the top 0.3%. He was a recipient of the Presidential Award from his alma mater and received a Certificate of Distinction from the Philippines Professional Regulation Commission.
Throughout his career, Dr. Sy has held key clinical and leadership roles at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, Plantation General Hospital, Toledo Children’s Hospital and Pediatrix Medical Group, where he served as corporate medical director for the North Florida Division. His leadership work has focused on clinical quality improvement, pediatric program development, and strengthening critical care delivery across multidisciplinary teams.
Dr. Sy’s areas of special interest include shock resuscitation, respiratory physiology and mechanical ventilation, and nutrition in the critically ill child. These interests continue to guide both his bedside practice and mentoring of emergency and pediatric residents.
A dedicated clinical researcher early in his career, Dr. Sy has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications on pediatric metabolism, nutrition and critical illness. His work has appeared in leading journals, including the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the American Journal of Physiology, and JPEN. He has also contributed numerous abstracts, poster presentations and critical appraisals to national conferences, including FASEB and the Society of Critical Care Medicine.
With a strong foundation in clinical excellence, leadership and research, Dr. Sy remains committed to advancing pediatric critical care through innovation, education and compassionate, patient-focused practice.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Sy enjoys a full and active family life. He and his wife, Marilyn, are proud parents of a son, Jhockim, with whom he shares a love of basketball, computer gaming and chess. Dr. Sy values quality time with his family and the balance it brings to his work in pediatric critical care.
