Tom Black, M.D.

About

Dr. Charles Thomas Black, board certified in pediatric surgery, has more than 30 years of experience. He completed a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in microbiology before receiving his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He completed residency training at Baylor College of Medicine Affiliated Hospitals in Houston under the direction of Dr. Michael E. DeBakey. Realizing that pediatric surgery was his primary interest, he spent a year as a fellow in pediatric surgery at the James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis with Dr. Jay Grofeld. In addition, Dr. Black completed a pediatric surgery residency at the Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago with Dr. John Raffensperger.

From 1987 to 1999, Dr. Black served on the faculty of the University of Texas Department of Surgery, most recently as Associate Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics and as Director of Undergraduate Surgical Education. He spent 10 years of that time in the Section of Pediatric Surgical Oncology at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and the last two years as Acting Chief of Surgery at the Lyndon B. Johnson County Hospital, both located in Houston. He has over 50 publications in the surgical literature and has particular interests in pediatric surgical oncology, neonatal surgery and minimally invasive surgery.

Dr. Black has introduced the new Bascom procedure to Pediatric Surgical Associates for improved treatment of pilonidal disease with excellent patient results. Dr. Black has been married over 40 years to Ruth and they have six sons and nine (so far) grandchildren.
