Are you a physician looking to practice in multiple states or territories? The Interstate Medical Licensure Compact (IMLC) offers a faster path to licensure for qualified physicians.
Launched in 2017, the IMLC seeks to significantly streamline the licensing process and currently includes 40 states, the District of Columbia and the Territory of Guam (click here to see a map). Eligible physicians can complete one application through the IMLC and receive separate licenses from multiple participating states where they apply to practice.
Advantages of the IMLC for Physicians:
- Greater Mobility: You can explore career opportunities across the country without the hassle of obtaining multiple state licenses.
- Faster Licensure: The IMLC speeds up the process, which can otherwise take months or even years.
- Standardized Requirements: You'll be evaluated based on consistent standards across participating states.
What You Need to Know:
To be eligible, you must hold a full, unrestricted license in a state that participates in the IMLC. Your primary residence should be in that state (known as the State of Principal License or SPL), and you must use that SPL for federal income tax purposes. You should also be employed by a business or organization in that state, and at least a quarter of your medical practice should be there. For the full list of requirements, see the IMLC website.
