While bassinets are recommended as the safest place for newborn sleep, not every baby settles easily in one. This response is common, since the stillness of a firm, flat mattress can feel unfamiliar after the warmth and motion of the womb. Short-term issues can sometimes interfere with a baby’s sleep. Robert Quillin, M.D., a board-certified pediatrician at Pediatrix® Newborn Services of Texas, said bassinet rejection may be due to a change in sleep routine or an illness. Even small changes, such as moving the bassinet from one side of the bed to the other, can disrupt a baby’s routine. “Moving the bassinet puts the infant in an unfamiliar location and may even result in a lighting change or temperature difference,” said Dr. Quillin.
