What to Know About Triple Feeding

The Bump

The triple feeding protocol can boost milk supply and support your baby's weight gain, though it may be challenging both emotionally and physically. If you have twins or other multiples, triple feeding can be very helpful, said Jenelle Ferry, M.D., a board-certified neonatologist and director of feeding, nutrition and infant development at Pediatrix® Neonatology of Florida. “If mom has trouble breastfeeding both babies at once or back-to-back, another option can be to breastfeed one baby while the other receives a bottle, then vice versa for the following feed,” she said. The process is similar to triple feeding – “breastfeeding baby, pumping and bottle-feeding baby at each session,” added Dr. Ferry. One of the benefits of triple feeding is that it increases baby’s milk intake. “Mom and baby both get the hormonal and regulatory benefits of direct breastfeeding, and baby continues to get appropriate nutrition,” said Dr. Ferry. But there are downsides, including if you triple feed for too long. “If continued beyond the period needed for improving latch or to build supply, prolonged triple feeding can also lead to overproduction,” noted Dr. Ferry. “It can be helpful to check in with a lactation consultant and baby’s pediatrician to ensure both mom and baby are getting what they need.”
