What to Know About Postpartum Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are common during pregnancy, affecting 50-90% of mothers. They are one of the most noticeable signs of pregnancy, but many people know very little about them. Stretch marks “form from tissue cells tearing in one of the deeper layers of our skin,” explained Brandi Fields, CNM, a certified nurse-midwife at OB Hospitalists of Ohio, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. “The skin is stretching faster than the tissue cells can adjust." They are part of the body’s healing response to injury. “Stretch marks are considered scars because the tissue layer has been transformed permanently,” said Fields. “The resulting stretch marks are a product of what the body has done to heal the layer of skin that has torn from the physical impact.”
