What Parents Should Know About New COVID-19 Variants

Fall and winter are always accompanied by various viruses, from the common cold and the flu to COVID-19 and its many variants. Experts expect an uptick in COVID-19 cases this season with the new COVID-19 variants, but whether they will cause more severe symptoms is unknown. “As for how symptoms of these variants might differ from other COVID variants or Omicron sublineages, there’s not a lot of data about that right now,” said Zachary Hoy, M.D., pediatric infectious disease specialist at Pediatrix® Nashville Pediatric Infectious Disease. “With the BQ.1 variant increasing, health care settings have not reported a spike in different types of symptoms,” said Dr. Hoy. “There are similar symptoms as with other COVID variants, including cough, fever and body aches.”
