Vaginal itching causes major discomfort for women. It’s a common occurrence, and there are many reasons why it happens. One cause is bacterial vaginosis (BV), which is triggered by bacterial overgrowth and a pH imbalance in the vagina. According to Suzanne Bovone, M.D., a board-certified OBGYN at Obstetrics and Gynecology of San Jose, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group, while BV is not sexually transmitted, you should refrain from sex and avoid douching if you have and/or are being treated for BV. To help soothe the itching, Dr. Bovone recommends massaging a thin layer of coconut oil post-shower, or when your skin is damp and clean, to moisturize and soothe the skin. “This is not a treatment for yeast, but it is an option to use in the event the itching is from dryness,” said Dr. Bovone.
