Talking about periods with your child before their first one helps them understand bodily changes and prevents confusion or surprise when it happens. Choose a comfortable place for your child when having the conversation. “I would recommend starting the conversation in a private area, maybe set up a lunch or dinner date,” said Kimberlee Coleman, M.D., a board-certified OBGYN at Obstetrics and Gynecology of Southeast Florida, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. Start by saying you’d like to talk about some of the changes that your child will experience as they grow older, said Dr. Coleman. “First ask what she knows about body changes and periods,” she suggested. “Then ask if she has any questions about what she has heard or learned at school.”
