The rampant spread of COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses

Despite precautions such as masking and social distancing, COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses continue to spread throughout the country. Some wonder if schools and daycares are as vulnerable to these viruses as they are to the common cold and continue the spread of viruses. “I do not think this represents a failure of preventative measures of schools and daycares and do not think it’s related to the mechanism or spread of virus,” said Zachary Hoy, M.D., a pediatric infectious disease specialist at Nashville Pediatric Infectious Disease in Tennessee, part of the Pediatrix® family. “We have also seen strains of COVID-19 that are more transmissible in general, so that likely contributes to the increased spread we have seen recently.”
