Subchorionic Hematomas

In a normal pregnancy, the amniotic sac attaches to the uterine wall. Sometimes, it partially detaches, creating a pocket of blood called a subchorionic hematoma. “There isn’t a way to prevent a subchorionic hematoma,” said Kyle Graham, M.D., a board-certified OBGYN and medical director at Obstetrics and Gynecology of San Jose, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. “Avoiding situations that put stress on the placenta, such as maintaining proper blood pressure, avoiding abdominal trauma, wearing your seat belt correctly and consulting your physician if you are on blood thinners, can help,” explained Dr. Graham.
