Stages of the Menstrual Cycle Throughout Life

As with many aspects of the body, a woman’s menstrual cycle changes and evolves with age due to changing hormone levels, pregnancy and perimenopause. Giving birth also affects the menstrual cycle, which takes time to regulate. “After giving birth, the bleeding that you have is called lochia and it is not a period,” said Suzanne Bovone, M.D., OBGYN at Obstetrics and Gynecology of San Jose, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group in California. “It is a shedding of the lining from pregnancy and may take up to six to eight weeks to stop. When you do have your first period after pregnancy, it may be heavier and take a few cycles to regulate, while some may also notice cramps worsen.”
