Two decades ago, the Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, Idaho, welcomed the first baby to its new neonatal intensive care unit. Back then, the unit had only six beds. Fast forward 20 years, and you’ll find 32 beds in the state-of-the-art, award-winning Level 3 NICU. “A lot has changed in the field of neonatal intensive care in the last 20 years, and we’re fortunate and blessed to be at the front of all of those changes to where [we] now provide virtually every kind of respiratory care – invasive and non-invasive, we provide pediatric surgical care to the tiniest babies,” said Stewart Lawrence, M.D., NICU medical director and neonatologist at Mountain States Neonatology, an affiliate of Pediatrix® Medical Group. Dr. Lawrence has worked in the NICU since its inception.
