Baby Le'Lani was born premature at 27 weeks with a congenital heart disease called transposition of the great arteries, which required corrective arterial switch surgery just a week following her birth. Under the collaborative care of John Loyd, M.D., neonatologist at Pediatrix® Neonatology of Texas and Dell Children's Medical Center (DCMC) together with DCMC’s cardiology team, she was given medicines to help her heart ahead of the surgery, which successfully took place in October. Now in the neonatal intensive care unit, she is preparing to go home, likely sometime in January around her original due date. "Her prematurity issues are going to keep her in the hospital for a while, but it won't be her heart," said Dr. Loyd. "There's a lot of places that can take care of a premature baby, but not many places are equipped to care for a baby like that combination" of premature and with a severe heart condition, noted Dr. Loyd.
