While the birth of a baby is undoubtedly a joyous event, many women experience sadness, anxiousness or frustration following pregnancy. According to Jill Purdie, M.D., medical director and OBGYN at Northside Women’s Specialists, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group, these may be side effects from the rapid drop in hormones and the emotional and psychological changes that go along with having a new baby. Recommended treatment for postpartum depression (PPD) typically consists of therapy and/or medication. Prescription antidepressant medications reduce PPD symptoms by balancing the chemicals in your brain. “As with all medications, talk with your health care provider about the risks versus benefits of being on the medication while pregnant or breastfeeding,” said Dr. Purdie. Additionally, asking for support from family and friends as well as exercise can help improve mom’s mental state.
