For kids, Halloween often ends with a tummy ache from eating too many sweet treats. “While eating candy in reasonable portions is generally considered safe,” explained said Dyadin Esharif, M.D., a pediatric gastroenterologist and medical director at Pediatrix® Gastroenterology of Florida, “too much candy might cause problems for children in the short term and even long term.” Long term, excessive sugar intake may alter the healthy bacterial content of the gastrointestinal tract, which has been linked to “chronic GI inflammation and high risk of infection.” To help prevent and soothe stomach discomfort, Dr. Esharif recommends limiting portions, encouraging kids to try natural candy and staying hydrated.
