Period underwear has become increasingly popular in recent decades. “Period underwear is made to feel like regular underwear while absorbing the menses without feeling wet,” explained Kimberlee Coleman, M.D., an OBGYN at Obstetrics and Gynecology of Southeast Florida, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. Period underwear offers protection and support throughout menstruation. “The absorbency layer is placed in the gusset area between the legs, directly below the vagina to absorb leakage and flow,” said Dr. Coleman. Design and absorbency vary by manufacturer and style. Some pairs have an extended gusset that goes farther posteriorly and anteriorly to prevent leakage during the day and night, and some pairs are entirely absorbent, explained Dr. Coleman.
