There are several myths when it comes to ovarian health. One is that you can only get ovarian cancer if you have a family history of it. But women with no family history can still get ovarian cancer, said Jill Purdie, M.D., a board-certified OBGYN and medical director at Northside Women’s Specialists, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. One in 78 women will get ovarian cancer in their lifetime. Another myth is that finding an ovarian cyst means you have ovarian cancer. Don’t worry too much if your doctor finds a cyst, said Dr. Purdie. Ovarian cysts are common, and most are benign. “Anywhere from 10 to 50% of women will have an ovarian cyst in their lifetime.”
