For women who prefer not to use a hormonal birth control method, natural family planning is a popular alternative. It entails closely tracking your menstrual cycle and other signs of ovulation to prevent a pregnancy. According to Jill Purdie, M.D., an OBGYN and medical director at Northside Women’s Specialists, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group, the most common sign people generally watch for is keeping track of your menstrual cycle from the first day of your period. People also opt to track their cervical mucus. “It’s like a sticky, egg-white-like discharge that lets people know they’re probably ovulating in the next 24 hours and to avoid having sex,” explained Dr. Purdie.
