Monkeypox in Kids

Kids are being diagnosed with monkeypox and with the start of school, parents may be concerned that schools and daycare centers could be a breeding ground for viral spread. However, Zachary Hoy, M.D., pediatric infectious disease specialist at Pediatrix® Nashville Pediatric Infectious Disease, said cleaning and preventing close contact between infected people can prevent transmission. “Monkeypox can live on surfaces similar to other viruses. It is most commonly spread through close contact of someone who has monkeypox,” he explained. “Routine cleaning of classroom and day care settings should be considered adequate.”
