Laxatives May Increase Dementia Risks

A study published in the journal “Neurology” identified a 51% increased risk of overall dementia among people who regularly used laxatives compared to those who didn’t. Using multiple types of laxatives, or osmotic laxatives, further increased the risk of both all-cause dementia and vascular dementia. “This study is quite interesting in that it has an extremely large population that was sampled,” said Theodore Stathos, M.D., a pediatric gastroenterologist and medical director at Pediatrix® Gastroenterology of the Rocky Mountains. “This would imply that laxatives do increase the general risk ratio for developing dementia in adults that are chronically using laxatives.”
