How to Know if Your Tween or Teen Has Endometriosis

Parents navigating their child’s first period will likely have questions as to what is considered normal. For those with heavy, painful periods, endometriosis could be the culprit. "The classic symptom of endometriosis is pain," said Suzanne Bovone, M.D., OBGYN at Obstetrics and Gynecology of San Jose, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. "It is usually cyclic with the menstrual cycle, but not always." Dr. Bovone noted that if found early, treatment can help significantly reduce symptoms so that the condition doesn't disrupt the child's life, health and future fertility. "Diagnosis can be made based on clinical history and exam," she said.
