Easing heartburn during pregnancy

One common symptom of pregnancy is heartburn. “More than half of women experience heartburn, also called gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD, during pregnancy,” said Jill Purdie, M.D., medical director and OBGYN at Northside Women’s Specialists, part of Pediatrix® Medical Group. Heartburn usually strikes in the second trimester when the organs shift. “It typically starts in mid-second trimester when the uterus comes out of the pelvis and becomes part of the abdomen,” said Dr. Purdie. For relief, several over-the-counter medications are considered safe for use during pregnancy, and home remedies like spacing meals out and not eating before bed are also helpful.
