Challenges for Working Breastfeeding Parents

A recent survey found that one in three working breastfeeding parents lack a place to pump at work, despite the 2022 federal PUMP for Nursing Mothers Act. The ability to pump is critical for a working parent trying to meet American Academy of Pediatrics and World Health Organization recommendations for exclusive breastfeeding, said Jenelle Ferry, M.D., a board-certified neonatologist and director of feeding, nutrition and infant development at Pediatrix® Neonatology of Florida. Both groups advise exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months, followed by complementary foods up to at least 2 years. "Lack of pumping or breastfeeding spaces both at work and in public spaces also exacerbates inequality," added Dr. Ferry.
