The Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend masks for children over 2 to help prevent COVID. However, they need better protection than the cloth masks offer, and the medical-grade N95 masks have not been tested or approved for young children. “Authorities will likely reevaluate mask wearing for children in the spring, but only if and when vaccines become available for them and Omicron rates decline,” said Zachary Hoy, M.D., pediatric infectious disease specialist at Pediatrix® Nashville Pediatric Infectious Disease. Until then, he recommends kids keep masking in enclosed spaces and in large groups where social distancing isn’t possible. A good option for young children is a medical-grade respirator, such as a KN95 or a KF94.
